NEW ZEALAND:

There is a book to be published soon on the Alexander YULE family who left Glasgow October 1839 on the Bengal Merchant and arriving New Zealand on 20 February 1840. The family settled in Petone.

This photo was taken on the golden wedding anniversary of Grace YULE and William Scott MILNE in 1907.

Alexander was the son of Robert YULE and Janet THOMPSON. This family are on the 1821 census of Lesmahagow. He married 2 May 1830 in the parish of Lanark to Elizabeth STEVENSON. In 5 December 1837 he married in the Barony Parish to Elizabeth WATSON.

Robert Thompson Burch has sent the editor a few other details. artybees@actrix.gen.nz

Elizabeth STEVENSON YULE was accidentally burned to death when her skirt caught fire while tending her copper.

Alexander YULE Jr. was born only a few weeks after their arrival in New Zealand so ELIZABETH WATSON YULE must have had a very uncomfortable voyage.

The Rev. John Macfarlane was the first Minister of Knox Church in Lower Hutt. Alexander was a founding elder of this church and a member of the General Assembly of the Free Presbyterian Church of New Zealand.

Alexander YULE first settled in the Hutt Valey in Wellington Harbor and later he moved to Waiarapa. He was a sawyer so would have been involved in clearing the brush from what is now farmland.

Kozy Bear:      A letter received by email.

Dear Madam:

I stumbled upon your site after doing a search on the web. I read with interest the piece in newsletter 18 from April 1997 about Kozy Bear – the talking bear novelty for promoting our products. Since 1997, we have moved a3way from the domestic (direct sales to home-owners) market and now provide glass products, aluminium and PVCu framed products (glass and windows) primarily for the construction industry in both trade and commercial markets.

My grandfather A. C. Yule, the founder of the company (in 1946 after WW2 RAF service) died in 1985 (b. 3 June 1904). My father is Co Chairman and my elder brother Bryan is MD (CEO).

My aunt Helen is still active in the business – she just turned 75 on 27 May 2003. My younger brother Mark (b. 10 July 1971) is also involved – as you can see still very much a family business based and head-quartered in Aberdeen, Scotland but we have branches and subsidiary companies in Elgin, Forfar, Perth. Livingston, Clydebank (Glasgow) (all of Scotland) and Sutherland and NE England.

My Aunt is very interested in our family history and has done a lot of research into this – she had mentioned she will give me a copy of what she had so far and your site is a very valuable resource for further research.

I am GUTTED that it appears I am not entitled to wear Buchanan form the information on your Site- I had always thought we were a legitimate Sept of the Clan and accordingly, (and at no little expense!) I have just ordered a pair of trews made from a rare Buchanan form an “old and rare” collection of tartans. I will probably have the only pair in Scotland (or further???) but should not really be wearing them!!!. It pays to do a

bit of research beforehand. Anyway, for now, I will cling to the romantic notion I have conjured up that my forbears hail from the lands on the north eastern shore of Loch Lomond until someone gives me conclusive proof to the contrary.

Once I have more information from my Aunt’s investigation into our immediate and most recent predecessors, I look forward to visiting your wonderful site again.
