Angus to Arctic Waters:

Charles YULE went to sea when he was 14 years old. His apprenticeship was served on ships sailing out of Montrose. Most of his ships brought flax from the Baltic Countries to Dundee.

In 1855, was the third officer on the 900-ton 'Sea King'. At the time it was the largest ship built on the River Tay and launched in 1853. This was the time of the Australian gold Rush. The cargo was loaded in London and stopped at Southampton to embark 483 emigrants for Geelong near Melbourne.

The ship had 42 crewmembers. The weather was good and they made the voyage in 72 days without a casualty, which was unusually in those days. The emigrant ships were often overcrowded and epidemic diseases would take their toll on the passengers. Fourteen infants were born during the trip.

Charles YULE left the ship in Geelong and tried his hand at gold mining for 3 ½ years. He did not have much luck in this enterprise so joined a barque sailing to Britain. The ship floundered 120 miles off the coast of Ireland but everyone was rescued within a few hours.

Charles YULE obtained his master's certificate and became the captain of the brig 'Gazelle out of Montrose. An accident kept him on shore for a while and he joined the service of Alexander Stephen & Sons, ship builders and owners in Dundee.

His main route was bringing timber out of Swinemunde on the ship 'Isabella'. He made a name for himself when he managed to get his ship away from the mouth or the River Oder one day before the route was blocked by the Danes in 1864.

In 1866, he was promoted to the new whaler 'Esquimaux'. He had one of the best catches of whales that year out of Dundee. He spent 14 years hunting whale and seal in the waters off Greenland, Newfoundland and Davis Straits. In one year he brought back 19 whales to Dundee.

Many ships were lost in the Artic runs and the 'Equimaux' had a number of narrow escapes. Once a large area of ice broke off from the pack and was carried south. A gale blew the ice back and trapped four Dundee whalers the 'Alexander, Narwhal, Polynia' and the "Esquimaux' between two large ice masses. The crews work quickly to lessen the pressure of the ice and using ice saws managed to get the job done in four hours, just in time to save their ships. The four ships were caught in the ice for 14 days before the ice broke up again and they were free.

Captain Yule was appointed harbormaster at Dundee in 1883 and served until 1920. During this time he was presented to Queen Alexandra when the royal Yacht Victoria and Albert was docked at Dundee.

Note: Thanks to Roy Yule of Dundee for sending an article on the long service employees of the Dundee Harbor Trust. (Papers held in Dundee Library 'From Gold Fields to artic Waters' no date).

Charles YULE was born 26 August 1835 Montrose, Angus and died 26 September 1935 in West Ferry, Dundee, Angus. He was the son of William and Christina (SMITH) YULE.

He married 15 November 1866, Prestonpans, East Lothian to Helen Jones. She was born 1847 and the daughter of Robert and Jane (DICKSON) Jones. As far as we know they only had one son William James YULE born 11 October 1867 in Prestonpans, East Lothian.

William YULE was also a ship's captain out of Montrose. He was born 13 May 1805 Montrose and died 20 February 1845 in Port of Prince Santa Domingo, West Indies. His parents were David and Elizabeth (CHRISTIE) YULE. He married 26 November 1827 St. Cyrus, Kincardineshire to Christina SMITH the daughter of ---- SMITH and Mary GIBB. She was born 1802 and died 21 August 1857, Montrose, Angus.

William and Christian YULE had seven children all born in Montrose. Alexander b. 24 December 1837 and died 12 December 1837, Montrose; Mary Ann b. 5 December 1831 and died 6 August 1857 Montrose; William 14 August 1833 and died 31 July 1870 Davis Straights, Greenland; Christina b. 22 May 1843 died 20 July 1878 and who married Robert WOOD; David b. 28 December 1828; Charles 26 August 1835 and died 26 September 1935 Dundee and married Helen JONES; Alexander b. 20 August 1839 and who married Jessie B.
