George Youell

Obituary: CANON GEORGE YOUELL, who has died 84, exercised notable ministeries in the
Potteries, where he was Archdeacon of Stoke-on-Trent, then in Ely, where he was
a Canon Residentiary of the Cathedral and held the offices of Vice-Dean and
Treasurer.
Youell belonged to a now almost extinct
breed of clerics who were disinclined to question their church's traditions and
instead devoted themselves, in his case with enormous energy, to pastoral work
and preaching among people who still valued "a human parson".
As an archdeacon he
translated his gifts into the care and leadership of the clergy. Endowed with a
dry wit, bushy eyebrows and a figure suited to a dignitary's gaiters, he was every
inch a senior churchman, but entirely devoid of pomp or pride.
In 1961 he combined
his archdeaconal duties with those of the chaplaincy of Keele University. The
university was in the early stages of its development and Youell laid the foundations for full-time work among
students and introduced well-ordered worship into the fine new chapel. He also
took the opportunity to take a degree and, aged 59, was awarded an MA.
George Youell was born in Suffolk on Dec 23 1910. After
attending St Michael's School, Beccles, he felt drawn to the Free Church
ministry and went to the Hartley Victoria Methodist Theological College at
Manchester. But towards the end of his training he became an Anglican and,
after a year at St Stephen's House, Oxford, was ordained in 1933 to a curacy in
Chester.
Four years of
intense pastoral activity made Youell aware of
the need for the Church to take an active role in tackling social problems.
This led to his appointment as North-West Area Director of the Industrial
Christian Fellowship, then a flourishing organization much influenced by the
ideas of Archbishop William Temple, which held services in factory canteens.
When the Second
World War broke out Youell immediately enlisted
as a chaplain and was posted to the 2nd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards.
He went to France
with the BEF and, after Dunkirk, he joined the Guards Armoured Brigade.
Promotion to Senior Chaplain led to a posting to Nigeria where he developed a
great affection for Africa and its people; he was pleased to return to Nigeria
and the Gold Coast after a spell at Woolwich in 1944.
In 1949 he wrote
about his experiences in the book Africa Marches, and retained the connection
by serving as a Commissary in England for the Bishop of Lagos.
Demobilisation in
1946 was followed by his appointment as Rector of the small Shropshire parish
of Ightfield with Calverhall. Eager for more responsibility, Youell was appointed Vicar and Rural Dean of Leek in
Staffordshire in 1952.
This post provided
greater scope for his gifts and in 1956 he became Archdeacon of Stoke-on-Trent,
retaining his position as Vicar of Leek for another four years until he began
work at Keele. When he gave way to a full-time university chaplain he returned
to parochial work at Horton, near Leek. And from 1967 to 1970 he was an
Honorary Canon of Lichfield Cathedral.
In 1970 Youell was appointed Canon Residentiary of Ely, the
cathedral he was to serve for the next 13 years. By then English cathedrals
were beginning to welcome visitors more warmly, for worship and other
activities.
Ely had somewhat
lagged behind in this development and, although Youell
met some opposition in the Chapter, his obvious enjoyment of people soon began
to make an impact among both visitors and members of the cathedral community.
His thoughtful, well-researched sermons were highly valued.
After retiring in
1983 he continued to live at Ely but traveled extensively to preach and address
meetings.
Youell's first wife, with whom he had two
sons and three daughters, died in 1982. He married secondly, in 1983, Mary
Phillipson.
