Orkney Islands: St. Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall
In the Memory of the Reverend Robert YULE born 21 July 1761 died 7 June 1824
After having been, 32 years, first minister of Kirkwall
A few of his personal friends have erected this tablet grateful and respectful memorial of talents, which they venerated and worth, which they loved.
From the History of the United Presbyterian Church in Orkney: by John smith, Kirkwall.
John YUILE a student at the University and Marischal College, Aberdeen became the schoolmaster of Rhyndie, Aberdeenshire. He was licensed by the Presbytery of Strathbogie, June 1734 and later became a missionary to Portsoy, Banffshire.
His name was presented to the Walla and Flota Presbytery on 12 November 1746 which he declined. There upon the Magistrates and council for the commissioners of James the Ealr of Morton, presented him on the 8th July 1747 and he was ordained 28 July 1747 to the church at Kirkwall.
He was visited by the Principal Gordon of the Scots College in Paris, whose remarks as stated by Mr. Hossack ‘with regards to the cathedral of Kirkwall, it must be owned to the Honour of Mr. YULLE, present minister of Kirkwall, that not one minister, nor all the ministers together, have done so much as he has done for the keeping this venerable building in repair, while his manse is one of the meanest buildings I have seen of its kind’.
Mr. YUILE died 9 June 792 in his 35th year of his ministry.
He married 23 February 1748 to Christina BAIKIE, the youngest daughter of a previous incumbent. On the death of this lady, he married, 2 November 1756, Barbara Traill, daughter of the Rev. Thomas TRAILL of Hobbister, minister of Ladykirk.
Robert YULE obtained a degree from the University and Marischal College in Aberdeen February 1779. He was ordained as assistant and successor 15 July 1789. He died 7 June 1824 at aged 63 years. His wife Ann TRAILL died 20 June 1835.
Robert YULE was the third in line of ministers of Kirkwall in a succession for 1230 years.
