Kincardineshire is located south of Aberdeenshire and north of Angus. It is a farming county with 16 parishes. In ancient history the lands belonged to the Caledonian Vernicomes and was included in the Roman provience of Vespasiana and later formed part of Pictavia.

YULES are mentioned in some of the earliest records.



Aberdeen Sheriff Court: Judicial Enactments;Vol. III.,

'The Forest of Birse: In a case between Alexander Cumin of Cultyr and Thomas Cumin of the Hyrne, of which neither the beginning not the end is reported, but from which it appears that Thomas Cumin was claiming, as against the laird of Cultyr, to be owner, by right conferred on him by his father, of a herd of wild horses in the Forest of Birse, the following evidence is found recorded, supplying a picture of the Forest and of the Mounth 400 year ago.

April 13 1507: The said day Alexander Allane deponit be his aitht that he knew nocht gif the mers horss stags ande folis war givin to Thomas Cumin bot he herd say that the said Thomas Cuminis fadir wauld haue gevin thame to him or he decesit.

Thomas YUYLL deponit be his aitht that (he) herd and was besid quhen William Cumin Thomas Cuminis fadir gef to the said Thomas the mers horss stags and folis befor or he decessit xxth yer.' (p106)

July 23, 1617: William Yuill of Hall of Murthill and James Yuill in Newtoune of Murthill were cited against James Chessour, Girdsman in Counteswallis. 'Defences to be lodged on 30 July, but no entry found then or afterwards'. (P.220)

On September 30, 1626, Walter YUILL in Beinzeill. Banchory-Devonick is mentioned twice. Once as a cautioner and also against Marjory Meinzies, liferentrix of Galsterberie. On July 5, 1627, John YULL in Murthill was brought to the court for non payment of crofting fees (Loosings of Arrestments) by Walter Robertson, burgess of Aberdeen. (P. 294)



In the Banchory-Devonic Parish the church baptism records do not start until 1713 and marriages until 1716. There are two early families John born around 1690 and Robert born around 1695.

(1) John YULE son of John and Isobel (Keith) YULE was born 12 March 1717, Middleton Pitfour. He was a tailor by trade and there is a stone in the Banchory Devonick Cemetery for some of this family.

He married Isabel DUNCAN sister to John DUNCAN of Banchory-Devonick. She died 15 February 1772.

The tombstone reads "Here resteth in the Lord Isabel Duncan 15.2.1772 53 spouse to John YULLE taylor in this parish whose innocent useful & exemplary life gained her the esteem of all a parent a wife a Christian and a friend. She so conducted herself that her death was much lamented. Having the testimony of a good conscience and faith in Christ she was resigned to her last moments and in hopes of a joyful resurrection" (This stone is almost covered with grass)

(2) Robert YULE, son of Robert and Margaret (MURRAY) YULE was born 16 July 1724 Banchory-Devonick. He died 1798, Cove, Nigg Parish and is buried in the Churchyard Cemetery, Banchory-Devonick. He married 15 August 1749 Banchory-Devonick to Elspet MILNE who was born ca. 1753 and died 1769.

Helen was born 1756 and died 20 September 1828 and buried in Churchyard, Portlethan.

(4) Robert YULE son of Robert and Helen(MAIN) YULE, was born 5 July 1795, Clashfarquar, Banchory-Devonick and died 4 December 1878 Ballater House, Glenmuick, Aberdeenshire. He married Elizabeth LAW who was born 1803 and died 22 July 1866 and is buried in churchyard, Portlethen.



On the 1841 census the family lived at Allerice Street, Stonehaven, Robert was a clothier. His will says he died Loirestone House, Ballater and gives his family as David YULE writer, Edinburgh; George YULE merchant London and Calcutta; and Andrew YULE merchant, London and Calcutta.

(5) George YULE, son of Robert and Helen (MAIN) YULE, was born 5 May 1805 Clashfarquar, Banchory-Devonick and died 8 December 1887, 116 Crown Street, Old Macher, Aberdeen. He married 29 July 1837 Nigg, to Elizabeth HOWIE daughter of Peter and Isabella (EDWARD) HOWIE. She died 2 November 1890, Old Macher, Aberdeen. They had no family.



George was on the 1841 census at South Loirestone, the 1851 census at Bellside House, Banchory-Devonick and 1881 Census in Old Macher Parish. He was listed as a grain and corn merchant. In his will he left his estate to David YULE of Morningside, Edinburgh and George YULE, merchant in London. (his nephews)

(6) David YULE, son of Robert and Elizabeth (YOUNG) YULE, was born 1 January 1825, Stonehaven and died 4 January 1909, Bournmouth, England. He married 24 December 1849, St. Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh and also registered 23 January 1850, Stonehaven to Margaret YOUNG. She was daughter of James YOUNG and was born 18 February 1825, Stonehaven. She died 31 January 1911, Bournemouth, England.



David YULE was the cashier in the Sasine Office, Register House, Edinburgh. He later was a clerk in the Court of Session, Edinburgh.

(7) George YULE, son of Robert and Elizabeth (LAW) YULE, was born 7 May 1829, Stonehaven and died 26 March 1892. He married Elizabeth HANGER who was born 1833 and died 8 January 1880.

(8) Andrew YULE founded the Andrew YULE and Co. LTD., 8 Clive Row, Box 150, Calcutta, India.

(9) David YULE son of David and Margaret (YOUNG) YULE was born 4 August 1858, Morningside, Edinburgh, and died 3 July 1928 St. Albans, London. He married 1900 to Annie Henrietta YULE daughter of Andrew and Katherine YULE. Lady Yule died in 1950.

David and Andrew were very involved with jute in India. It is said that they owned half of Calcutta. He was knighted by the King. Lady YULE is said to be one of the main backers of Sir Arthur Rank and the British movie industry. It was her yacht that the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson cruised the Greek Islands before Edward abdicated the throne.



When David died his estate was listed as 6,320 pounds. ( David Yule in Florida remembers the obituary in the newspaper in Montreal, Canada and his seats was given as over $1,000,000) See below.



(10) Andrew YULE, son of David and Margaret (YOUNG) YULE, was born 8 July 1863, Morningside, Edinburgh and died 10 April 1916 at sea. He married Katherine

Yule, Sir David (1858-1928)

Industrialist, born in Edinburgh. His great wealth stemmed from the jute, paper and tea industries which were established by his uncle in Calcutta and London. After the death of his uncle in 1902, he became sole director of the companies, and by 1903 employed more than 190,000 people in India alone. He was responsible for significant advances in the forestry and agricultural industries, as well as the establishment roads, hospitals and schools. He was visited in India by King George V and awarded a knighthood. He received a Baronetcy in 1922, and in 1926 he bought the Daily Chronicle from Lloyd George. On his death, his widow was one of the wealthiest women in Britain. (Scottish biographical Dictionary)
