England:

Lower Class an Autobiography by George YOUELL, 1938, Seattle Washington.

George YOUELL wrote this book on his life growing up in rural England and as a trawler fisherman in the late 1880's. He writes that he was born in 1868 in a small village in East Anglia but does not give the name of the village. Nowhere in the whole book does he mention his mother's name and only once that his father was Tom. His parents had twelve children- no names given. He would often see the brewer's wagon with magnificent horses going through the village with the YOUELL name on the side. However his father was sure they were not related if they were it would be his 16th cousin (p.86). George says was not aware of any relatives. He had three older brothers in the fishing out of Yarmouth and Lowestoft so at the age of 13 started working on the herring trawlers.

In 1890, he decided to go to America and his father told him about half cousins John YOUELL and Mrs. William FISHER living in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1891, he wrote that he discovered he has 12 uncles, 13 aunts and 100 cousins (p.205). He married in 1897 in Tacoma but does not mention his wife's name.

There is a George YOUELL on the 1900 Soundex for Tacoma, Washington. According to the record, he was born April 1869 in England and took out naturalization papers in 1891. His wife is Julia May born May 1874 Ohio and daughter Marion born Sep. 1898, Washington State. On the 1920 Soundex for Oregon, living at 739 Halsey, Portland, is George, Julia May, and three children, Marion b. 1898, Thomas b. 1904, Washington and John b. 1907, Washington.
