MCNAB-ZUILLE Connection

Archibald MCNAB, known as "The Last Laird", son of Robert and Anne (MAULE) MCNAB, was born 1778, Killin, Perthshire, Scotland and died 1860 Lannion, Brittany. He married Margaret Robertson of Edinburgh. The marriage was registered 22 November 1806 in Killen, Perthshire and 1 December 1806 in Edinburgh, Midlothian. Margaret died 20 June 1868 and is buried in the Protestant Cemetery, Florence, Italy.

Archibald MCNAB became the 17th Chief of the Clan Macnab on the death of his uncle in 1816. He found that the estate was only 25 acres and he received only one thousand pounds income from the two farms on the estate. A few years later, after marriage and lavish life style, he found himself in dire straights and on verge of being taken to court for his debts. He fled Scotland leaving his wife and children in Perthshire. He went to London and then on to Canada. He petitioned the government of Canada for land and on November 5th 1823 was deeded land in what was then Mecklenburg County, Quebec. His first step was to build himself a house he called Kinnell Lodge after the clan home in Perthshire.

His advisors suggested that he bring some of his clansmen over to Canada (mainly to obtain the 100 acres per person given by the Canadian Government at the time). April 1825, eighty-four or five persons sailed for Canada arriving 25 May 1825 in Montreal. MCNAB obtained 81,000 acres and called the township MCNAB. Later the settlers found that McNab had charged them for their land which had been given free to him and they could have obtained the same land for themselves free from the government. He was accused of fraud and moved to White Lake, by then in Renfrew County, Ontario.

He had plans to build a grist mill on Waba Creek in the White Lake area. He leased his first grist mill to William YUILLE. John PARIS had already build a mill on the creek. There was a major problem with depriving PARIS water from the creek and he took Archibald MCNAB and William YUILL to court. Archibald was accused of boarding up the creek so Paris was unable to run his mill. Paris obtained a court order and a jury trial took place. The jury found for Paris and he sued for damages. MCNAB was fined 35 pounds and William YUILL fined 79 pounds. However according to the records William YUILL never paid his fine. He was still mentioned as a neighbor to the laird's house in 1846. Archibald claimed Margaret Robertson had died in 1831 so he could clear his real estate transactions without dower rights. (P. 83 McNab Township). William YUILL was said to have moved to the USA and died in the Civil War. (No proof as yet).

At White Lake, Archibald lived with Catherine Fraser, sister of Donald Fisher, for twenty years. Catherine was born in 1789, Scotland. They built a cottage on the Waba Creek near White Lake . In 1845, Archibald MCNAB left the township and went to Hamilton, Ontario to live near his distant cousin Sir Allan MCNAB. In 1853, he left Canada and went to a small estate in the Orkney Islands which had been given to him by Margaret ROBERTSON. Later, he met Elizabeth MARSHALL in London and married her, 26 August 1855, at St. Mary-le-Bone Parish Church, London. He was 78 and Elizabeth was 18. They moved to Paris for a few years. He died in 1860 in Brittany, France.
