William John YUILL (1885-1960) son of John and Agnes Jane (Cowie )Yuill, was born 10 October 1885 at Sabastian, Sandhurst, Victoria. He died 5 October 1960, Parkville, Melbourne.



He married 19 December 1911, California Gully, Bendigo, Victoria, to Maude Stewart Prowse.



He became interested in dairy farming came from his frequent trips to his grandmother's farm-store in Bendigo. In 1917, he became a dairy supervisor for the Victoria Department of Agriculture and was appointed to Mirboo North. He was active in establishing the Yinnar Herd Testing Association in 1920. Through this association he helped to establish improved methods of cow testing and value. In 1921 he introduced the Young Farmer's Club and was on their central council for many years. In 1930, he started the Dairy Farm competition which held annual education field days in the area.



He kept in touch with progress of dairy farming in New Zealand and America. In 1937, William became supervisor of herd testing in Victoria for the Department of Agriculture of Victoria. He wrote a number of articles in the Journal of Agriculture in Victoria.



He retired from the department in 1948 and joined the Australian Jersey Herd Book Society. He was known as the "father of dairy herd testing." He published his memoirs in 1958.

John was a miner at the time of the gold rush in Victoria. They had 11 children:

John YUILL, son of William and Agnes (PATERSON) YUILL, was born ca. 1827 and died 1910 Bendigo, Victoria. He married in 1854 to Christina McARTHUR daughter of John and Mary Ann (McDONALD) McARTHUR. Christina was born ca. 1829 and died 1916 Eaglehawk, Bendigo.



John and Christina (McARTHUR) YUILL had at least five children:

There is a William YUILL and Agnes PATERSON in the Scottish records but we did not find a son John born ca. 1827. However we did find two other children Margaret b. 1834 and Agnes born 1839 not recorded in any church register. It is possible that they did have a son John between 1825 and 1834.

William YUILL married Agnes PATERSON, 8 December 1816, East Kilbride, Lanark. He was a plumber. William and Agnes had at least 6 children:

Margaret YUILL married 31 December 1860, Patrick, Govan, Lanark to her cousin, Allan MARTIN. Allan was the son of William and Margaret (YUILL) MARTIN. Margaret (YUILL) MARTIN was born 1801, Campsie, Stirlingshire. William and Margaret MARTIN are on the 1851 census at Balachan, Campsie, along with James YUILL, her father, who was born 1768, Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire. However on the 1841 census James is listed as being born 1771 in Campsie and he could be the father of Margaret YUILL b. 1801 and William YUILL b.ca.1790.



Agnes YUILL married 18 October 1864, Patrick, Govan, Lanark, to George USMAR, son of George and Christian (SHARP) USMAR.



Jane YUILL died 12 September 1867, Maryhill Road, Maryhill, Lanark. She was married to Alexander CHARMICHAEL.

John DOUGALL, son of Duncan and Janet (GEMMILL) DOUGALL, was born 18 May 1786, Paisley and died 28 August 1836, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He married 21 May 1808. Abbey, Paisley, to Margaret YEULL daughter of Archibald and Jean (Mitchell) YOOL. Margaret died 25 March 1812 and is buried Paisley.



They had the following children: John born 8 July 1808, Paisley

"John DOUGALL born at Paisley Renfrewshire, 8 July 1808. He emigrated to Canada in 1826, where he became founder and publisher of the Montreal Witness. He married Elizabeth REDPATH. He died at Flushing, New York, 19 August 1886. Their children included John Redpath DOUGALL, editor of the Montreal Witness; James Duncan DOUGALL, editor of the New York Witness; Susan Grace DOUGALL. Said to have been one of the first women physicians in Canada; and Lily DOUGALL, a well-known novelist in her day."

John YULE arrived in Sydney on the ship 'Asia' on 27 June 1833. He was a butcher and candlemaker, aged 24. He is listed as a native of Stirlingshire. He could read and write. He was convicted at Edinburgh on 12 July 1832 and sentenced to be transported for 14 years for stealing a watch. He was 5ft. 6" with brown complection, brown hair, brown eyes and had lost his left eye. He had a scar on the palm of his right hand, another on the back of the right forefinger and his right little finger was contracted.
