Aberdeenshire:

In the book Boats & Builders, by Bill MacDONALD, wrote that the Fraserburgh boat yards and builders were the source of some of the finest and most successful boats in Scotland. Fraserburgh was one of Britain's busiest fishing ports. SCOTT & YULE built fishing boats of a modified style of ZULUS which were the best sailing craft made in Britain. They apprenticed under John Webster who had opened his boat building yard in 1840. SCOTT & YULE opened their yard in 1890 and continued to build sailing boats until they closed in 1915.

James YULE, of SCOTT and YULE, the son of George and Elspet (SMITH) YULE, was born 1846, Fraserburgh and died 31 Oct. 1924, Fraserburgh. He married 4 Dec. 1889, St Nicholas, Aberdeen, to Margaret FARQUAR daughter of John and Mary (HAMPTON) FARQUAR.

Alexander Buchanan YUILLE and William Cross YUILLE purchased 2,2000 Merino sheep and began a sheep ranch at Barwon, near Inverleigh but after having trouble with the natives they moved the operation to 10.000 acres at Ballarat in 1838.

William was the first white settler in Ballarat. Later the city of Ballarat was built on the YUILLE swamp, part of Lake Wendouree. In 1934 an obelisk was erected on the bank of Lake Wendouree to the memory of William Cross YUILLE. In 1840, William sold his part of the ranch to Alexander Buchanan YUILLE and moved to New Zealand.

In New Zealand, William obtained a large tract of land from the Maoris but the government refused to recognize his ownership and he returned to Scotland and then back to Australia.

In 1841, James Oliphant DENNY and William set up the mercantile firm of DENNY and YUILLE. In 1846, William became sole owner of the firm until 1853 when he sold it to W.J. T. Clarke. In 1851, William bought 8,000 acres of the Ballanrong Station near Hastings and 28,000 acres of Barwidgee. In 1852, Archibald YUILLE took over control of Ballanrong and William sold Barwidgee.

William Cross YUILLE returned to Scotland in 1853. He lived at Hyde House, Egham, Surrey near Windsor where two of his children were born. In 1858, he returned to Victoria, where he obtained land in Williamstown for racing quarters and began a successful career in horse racing. He had a number of champion race horses. In 1866, he sold his racing ranch and became a turf writer of a sporting column in the Australasian. In 1873, he gave up his column and founded a auctioneering firm specializing in stud horse sales. He began the Australian Stud Book which became the reference book for the Australian Jockey Club. The book was completed by his son Archibald and his grandson Albert Loddon YUILLE.

James YUILL born 3 May 1807, Houston, Renfrew, married Joan Ford ANDERSON, 19 May 1840, Peterhead, Aberdeen.

They had John Ford YUILL, born 28 October 1846, Peterhead and who was supposed to have died in Adelaide in 1893. Also James born 18 June 1848 Peterhead. Does anyone have information on the families of either James or John YUILL?

James and Joan Ford (ANDERSON) YUILL had two grandchildren listed on the 1891 census in Peterhead; Colin Scott aged 10 years born China and James Scott aged 9 years born China. Were these children of Emily Reid YUILL? They did have two other daughters Margaret Skelton YUILL who died at Edjou, Egypt 20 Feb. 1898 and Elizabeth Lang YUILL who died 1 Nov. 1891, Peterhead. Neither seemed to have married. (more on this family in a later issue).

On 26 Nov 1724, James DONALD, merchant, was admitted as a Burgess and Guild Brother of Glasgow. He was married to Marion, lawful daughter of Thomas ZUILL of Carleith. Thomas ZUILL or YUILLE of Darleith (c.1682-1756), son of Alexander YUILLE of Darleith and Mary CRAWFORD>, married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert BOGLE, in Glasgow 27 April 1708 and had 10 children but Marion was not one of them.

To be married in 1724, Marion must have been born before her father married in 1708. She was the lawful daughter so who was the mother??

Let us postulate that Thomas YUILLE married a first wife as a young man of twenty one about 1703, had a daughter Marion around 1704, his wife died in 1706 (perhaps in childbirth) Can anyone support this or suggest something better?
