"The King sent his lady on the first Yule day.

A papingo-aye; (peacock)

Wha learns my carol and carries it away?"(1)

Merry YULETIDE to everyone. This has been quite a year, we have connected some families but we have found many others with much research still to be completed on their Yule, Yuilles, Zuils.

In the News:

Douglas YULE as the representative for the Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise was on hand for the newly completed facelift of the Plock at the Kyle of Lochalsh. The area had been a park since 1947 but had become overgrown and dangerous. With a grant of 20,000 pound from the S.L.E. the area was cleared and new platforms, stairs and paths have been created to give an uninterrupted spectacular view of the Isle of Skye and the west coast of Scotland.

(Dundee newspaper (?) May, 1993)

Described as one of Scotland's biggest haulage companies, YUILL and DODDS of Strathven, Lanarkshire, faced fines of over 100,000 pound for forcing their drivers to work too many hours. Due to the amount of paperwork the sheriff deferred the sentence until October 9th.

One of the more prominent YUILLE families was the family who came from Mid Lothian to Argyll in the early 1600's. Many sources, especially in Australia, claim that this family was originally from Stirling (false) and that the father of John ZUILLS was Thomas (very doubtful). It is often taken for granted that all YUILLES are related to them (false). However it was the direct line of this family which registered a YUILLE family Coat of Arms around 1870.

ZUILLS-YUILLES of DUMBARTON

John Zuills was a writer for the Snyod of Argyll and a chief magistrate in Inverary. He owned land and houses on the main street in Inverary, Argyll(2). He along with his brothers, Nicol and James of Drum (E. Lothian) are mentioned frequently in the Synod records.

John married Agnes or Ann FISHER around 1645. They had the following children:

Margaret 11 December 1651

Alexander 6 January 1653: m. Mary CRAUFORD

Christaine 5 June 1656: m. William NOBLE

John 14 March 1661

David 22 March 1673

John 2 September 1667

Heline 27 November 1674

all baptized in Inverary,

Robert (ca 1845)

Katherine (3) m. John McArthur

In 1670, John Zuil bought the estate of Darleith from John Darleith of that ILK. It was located on the west side of Bonhill Parish, Dumbartonshire. This was the time when the King Charles through his council decided to change the Church of Scotland from Presbyterian to Episcopalism. Many did not accept the change and John was one who suffered for his principles. John was cited to appear before the commissioners who had been appointed to suppress the convantors in Dumbartonshire. He was to appear on October 1684 but because of illness he did not go until 19 February 1865. John admitted that he had withdrawn himself from the parish church since the change and declined to take the loyalty oath. John was fined 1,000 pounds sterling which he refused to pay and was taken prisoner to the Castle of Dumbarton.

A month after his imprisonment, Agnes/Ann fell ill but he was not permitted to visit her. It was not until his son Robert and his son-in-law became his bond that his jailers permitted him to attend the funeral of his wife. John died January 1688.

"Thus lived, suffered, and died, one whom even the enemies of the Covenant have not charged with any offence more grievous than that of worshiping God according to the dictates of his conscience" (3)

His son, Alexander succeeded to the estate of Darleith. Alexander Zuil married Mary Crauford, of Cartsburn, Renfrewshire, 10 May 1678, Glasgow, Lanark. According to family history, they were said to have five sons, two of whom were Robert born around 1679 and Thomas born 1680 both in Bonhill. The Bonhill parish register shows Alexander Yuill married 17 February 1678 in Bonhill Parish to Marie McDonald. They had Robert baptized 16 February 1678, Bonhill.

Thomas YUILLE, son of Alexander and Mary (CRAUFORD) YUILLE, married Elizabeth BOGLE (BOYLE) 27 April 1708 Bonhill. Elizabeth was from Shettleton, Lanark. They had 12 children.

Anne 13 January 1726, Bonhill

William (ca 1722-8, 5th son grad. 1744 Univ. Glasgow)

Alexander YUILLE must have died early as Robert inherited Darleith. Robert graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1732. He died in 1757 and his brother George inherited the estate.

George YUILLE married Margaret MURDOCH, daughter of George MURDOCH. They had fourteen children. George was a merchant in Glasgow and is listed as a tobacco merchant and the factor of the YUILL, MURDOCH & Company of Glasgow. This company had two stores in Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties, Virginia. (The account book of his company is available from 1754-7 at the Colonial Institute, Williamsburg). George, John and Thomas were the owners of the ship "Pelham" from 1798-1805. He was also a Lord Provost of Glasgow.

John YUILLE died 2 October 1746 (some records say Charles City County) in Virginia. He is buried in the Bruton Parish Cemetery, Williamsburg, Virginia. His tombstone is the first one west of the south door of the church.

"Here Lyes the Corps of John

Yuille Merchant son to Thomas

of Darleith in the County of

Dumbarton Scotland who died at

Williamsburg in Virginia upon

the 2 day of October 1746 years

in the 27th. year of his age"

Thomas YUILLE married Sarah (?) and died 1792 in Halifax County, Virginia. They had at least two children Thomas and Suzanna. Thomas was a merchant with the 'THOMAS YOUILLE and Company', also an attorney, planter and vestryman. He was the owner of the Rosebank estate on the Staunton River which is now near Clarkton, Halifax County. In 1817, his granddaughter, Jane YUILLE, married Edward Winston HENRY the son of Patrick HENRY.

Most of the tobacco lords were wealthy merchants who had been educated at Glasgow University. Most served on the Glasgow Corporation which controlled the city as the election of members were always from within the Corporation. These Glasgow merchants used the northwest route from Port Glasgow near Greenock to the Colonies. By using this shorter route, they could save on fuel, food and the wages of their crews and undercut the English companies. They set up their own stores serving the individual tobacco planter. By dealing directly with the plantation owners they were able to monopolized the tobacco trade for many years. Their trade with the Colonies came to a halt with the War of Independence in 1775.

These tobacco merchants built beautiful homes in Glasgow and dressed so all would know of their wealth. They wore scarlet coats, black satin suits, white wigs with a black three cornered hats, plus knee breeches, silk stockings and fancy shoes. Some of the names mentioned in the records of the more important merchants were BOGLE, MURDOCH and BUCHANAN all connect with this YUILLE family.

We will continue with this family in our next newsletter.
